Bo-Kapie self-catering cottage, built in 1833, is one of the oldest houses in Swellendam. It is also the last of the houses dating back to the slave history of Swellendam, which ended with their emancipation in 1834. Swellendam is situated on the N2 National Road, midway between Cape Town and George on the scenic Garden Route, and is the third oldest town in South Africa.
Bo-Kapie is a little flat-roofed Cape Georgian-style cottage with a moulded parapet, which was the preferred style of the Muslim artisans of the time. It is reminiscent of the typical Bo-Kaap houses in upper Cape Town, as they still exist today. The vertical panelled front door with fanlight has replaced the stable door of the Cape Dutch style and typically, this fanlight is also the only window of the "voorhuis" or front room.
A romantic little hideaway, Bo-Kapie cottage oozes charm and nostalgia. Furnishing is simple, with pieces aged by life. Accommodation is offered in two bedrooms; the main bedroom is en-suite with a Victorian bath and there is also a second bedroom with three single beds and a separate bathroom. Bo-Kapie sleeps up to seven guests and is fully equipped for self-catering and bedding is also provided. Features include an open hearth in the living room and kitchen area, with plenty of wood provided. The "voorhuis" sleeps two guests.
The cottage is centrally situated for museums, restaurants, shops, golf courses, hiking trails, and Marloth and Bontebok Nature Reserves. With so much to see and do in and around Swellendam, Bo-Kapie invites you for a longer stay.
