Borana is one of East Africa's original fully hosted, family-owned eco-lodge and is located within the vast area of the Ewaso ecosystem on the Laikipia Plateau. With snow-tipped peaks and the glaciers of Mount Kenya to the south and a panorama of mountains and desert to the north, Borana provides an idyllic setting for any African experience. Laikipia is an area of exceptional beauty, enjoying some of Kenya's most prolific wildlife, as well as the highest populations of endangered species in the country.
Accommodation is offered in eight cottages, each unique in style but all comfortable and cosy, with fireplaces and private verandahs. Guests will enjoy views over the Samangua Valley and lake, where elephants love to swim. The sitting and dining rooms are within the main lodge with log fires, rosewood tables and snug sofas, creating the atmosphere for entertaining evenings, while a stunning horizon swimming pool is ideal for relaxing.
Borana is famous for its horse riding adventures, but exploring the surrounding bush in Land Rovers is equally exciting with our intrepid and experienced guides. Sam and Amory lead walks on the ranch, and for the more active, mountain bike rides down the escarpment offer an adrenalin rush. The ranch is also perfect for picnics, sundowners on Pride Rock, the original inspiration for Disney's Lion King, and bush dinners.
Alternatively, a day with Michael Dyer offers the chance to understand the challenge of establishing a balance between wildlife management and cattle ranching. We also recommend a visit to Kisima, where Michael's brothers Martin and Charlie farm roses, sheep and wheat. On your return to the lodge, a relaxing massage is on offer in the comfort and privacy of your room.
